Inspiration is a powerful thing. The Artist in me is inspired by other artists, mostly musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, and Nina Simone Just to name a few. Music in general has been a big part of my life and work. You can see my use of music sheets and mixing hearts and brains with musical instruments. I do believe that art is founded on the idea that sharing in the creativity of others often sparks the greatest forms of creativity in you. It encourages me to take a look at my environment and my community. It ignites my vision, to create my own in hopes that it will inspire another.
My work addresses the roles we play in this world as humans, whether one is black, white, yellow, Jew, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or whatever one may choose to believe in, these days. Before everything and anything else, we have been set out to be. I believe one does not have to be colored to play a colorful role in this world. Your action and whatever you do, whether good or bad, will be an imprint of what you leave for others to see and or to follow, just keep in mind that you are Human before everything else.
My painting is not about any theory or –ism. There is no content other than the image and what it shows, no need for political messages. The lines themselves are only the visual evidence of the energy of the process we are going through as color people. My work consist of conceptually based sociopolitical and cultural objects. These past few years have been the most experimental years of my life. In all actuality, I find people are fascinating. Especially those who’ve to change themselves physically by design or accident. I refer to this as people being in an “altered state” and it is and has been something that bothers me as an African. I believe diversity is what makes this world beautiful and we contribute to that beauty. Black is beautiful period, and no one can dare to deny or change that fact but us. We are beautiful in every shape and or form and in any shade; we have the most captivating features that most people pay thousands of dollars to acquire. I just feel it‘s my obligation to show that in my work and It has been a great pleasure to paint with all-black color paint and it’s now becoming my thing… making the tones and details fascinate me. At first, it was a fear to try and now I look forward to it. This is reflected in my recent body of work, including “Black Diamond“, “Spring Is Here”, “We Are Family” collections, and many more to come.
